Texas Tidbits
___ HSU enrollment grows. Fall enrollment at Hardin-Simmons University stands at 2,291, an increase over last fall's total of 2,276. This fall's enrollment includes 712 new students, a 10 percent increase and the largest number of new students in the last five years.
___ DBU increases again. Fall enrollment at Dallas Baptist University is 4,417, the 15th consecutive year of increases. This year's gain of 115 students is a 2.7 percent increase over last fall.
___ Hunnicutt joins BGCT staff. Ken Hunnicutt, a veteran church business administrator and minister of education, has joined the Baptist General Convention of Texas Church Facilities Center staff as a full-time regional consultant. Hunnicutt, 49, is based in the BGCT regional service center at Tyler. He provides facilities consultations and other services for churches in East Texas and South Texas, including Houston and San Antonio. Hunnicutt served from 1991 through 1997 as business administrator at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. He served as minister of education at churches in Waco, Weatherford, Rosenberg and Sanger and as minister of music and youth in Whitewright. In recent years, he has been a chaplain to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and served in a variety of interim church staff positions, in addition to secular employment.
___ Amarillo agencies support BGCT. The boards of trustees of Baptist Community Services and High Plains Christian Ministries Foundation, both of Amarillo, recently voted to express their "strong and unwavering support" for the Baptist General Convention of Texas and its executive director, Charles Wade. T.H. Holloway, president of the two entities, presented a framed copy of the joint resolution to Wade during the regular meeting of the BGCT Human Welfare Coordinating Board Aug. 22-23 at South Texas Children's Home in Beeville. Holloway; Phillip Langen, BCS board chairman; and Bob Russell, foundation chairman, signed the resolution on behalf of the two boards.
___ Singer leads disaster relief fund-raiser. Nancy Cooke, a professional concert soprano and member of First Baptist Church of Corpus Christi, gave a benefit concert at the church Aug. 30 with assistance from British vocalist Frances McCafferty. Proceeds from the concert were divided between relief funds established by the Baptist General Convention of Texas and Corpus Christi Baptist Association to aid victims of flooding in South Texas. About 400 people attended the concert, generating $3,237 in contributions, in addition to a large amount of clothing donated.
___ Hillcrest honored. Hillcrest Family Health Center in Waco has received the Press Ganey 2002 Compass Award for outstanding performance improvement in medical practice. Improvements contributing to the recognition include installation of a new phone system to allow faster service and implementation of a system whereby patients can e-mail the clinics to get questions answered by physicians and nurses.
___ Korean Fellowship partners with SBTC. The Korean Baptist Fellowship of Texas has voted to become a partner with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, a rival entity to the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
