___bluebull Riley feted on anniversary. East Texas Baptist University celebrated the 10th year of Bob Riley's presidency during a fall convocation chapel Sept. 4.
___bluebull Baylor enrollment tops 14,000. For the second year, fall enrollment at Baylor University has topped 14,000. This year's enrollment of 14,159 is a slight decrease from last year's record enrollment of 14,221. As part of Baylor 2012, the university's new strategic plan, the size of the freshman class has been intentionally reduced in an effort to bring the student-faculty ratio from 19-to-1 to 13-to-1. This year's freshman class includes 2,620 students, 181 less than less fall. The average SAT score of entering freshmen also is on the rise, 1180 this year compared to 1176 last year. The university's Truett Seminary reported a record enrollment of 353 students this fall as well.
___bluebull New dorm opens at ETBU. East Texas Baptist University opened a new 200-bed apartment-style dormitory in time to receive students for the 2002 fall semester. Additional campus housing has been required to accommodate gains in enrollment.
___bluebull HBU nursing endowment begun. The Joella and Stewart Morris Foundation has given $100,000 to begin an endowment for the College of Nursing at Houston Baptist University.
___bluebull Resolutions requested. Messengers to the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual session, Nov. 11-12 in Waco, who wish to present resolutions for consideration by the BGCT resolutions committee may submit them prior to the convention. The deadline for submitting resolutions at the convention is 4 p.m. Nov. 11, but to allow adequate time for the committee to consider them, early submission is encouraged. Every proposed resolution must be signed by an elected messenger from a BGCT-related church, and the name of the messenger's church must be included. Proposed resolutions may be submitted to committee Chairwoman Julie Pennington-Russell, Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3313, Waco 76707.
___bluebull Staley lectures at DBU. Ron Mahurin, vice president for professional development and research at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, presented the Staley Distinguished Scholars Lecture series at Dallas Baptist University Sept. 16-17. Mahurin engaged in discussions with DBU students, faculty and staff concerning the role of Christian faith and service in today's world.
___bluebull UMHB sets enrollment record. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor reports a record fall enrollment of 2,656 students, up from 2,624 last fall. This marks the fifth consecutive year of strong enrollment growth. This fall's freshman class of 474 also is a record enrollment, up from 417 last year.
___bluebull Interim alumni director named. Julia Amason Walker, a 1960 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, has been named interim director of alumni relations at the Belton university. A veteran schoolteacher, Walker returned to campus in 1990 as a residence hall director. She was elected president of the alumni association in 1993.
___bluebull Parker Center to be dedicated. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will dedicate its new Parker Academic Center at 1 p.m. Sept. 27. Andy Davis, pastor of First Baptist Church of Belton and chairman of the university's trustees, will officiate. The center is named for Bobby Parker, former university president. Other speakers include President Jerry Bawcom and businessman Drayton McLane Jr. of Temple.
___bluebull Memorial committee seeks names, photos. The Baptist General Convention of Texas memorials committee is seeking photos for a presentation at the annual session in Waco, Nov. 11-12. Each year, the convention recognizes individuals who died during the preceding year, honoring those who made significant contributions to their churches and Texas Baptist life. To submit a name and photo, call (214) 828-5348 before Oct. 18.
