___bluebull Two regional associates named. Two additional regional associates have been named to the Baptist General Convention of Texas staff. Ronald Gunter will serve the metropolitan Houston area. He is a former hospital and police chaplain in Fort Worth and served as pastor of River Oaks Baptist Church in Fort Worth and First Baptist Church of Henrietta. Since 1994, he has served with the International Mission Board in Central Europe. Jim Furgerson, retired executive director of Texas Baptist Men, has been employed on a part-time basis as regional associate in the San Antonio area. They join the BGCT's first regional associate, Paul Saylors, who works in East Texas.
___bluebull Talbott to speak at Baylor. Former Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott will speak at Baylor University's president's forum Oct. 23. His address will focus on relations between the United States and China. Earlier in the day, leading scholars on China will participate in two panel discussions. The evening program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
___bluebull HBU names Walker to development post. Barbara Walker has been named associate vice president for development at Houston Baptist University. She previously served as director of development for the cardiology and cardiovascular sciences programs at Baylor College of Medicine. She has held similar posts with the Museum of Health & Medical Science, the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council and Texas A&M University-Texarkana.
___bluebull Wayland grows again. Fall enrollment in the Wayland Baptist University system is 5,778, a 4 percent increase over last year. The system includes Wayland's home campus in Plainview, which had an increase of nine students for a total of 1,002, as well as 11 external campuses. Much of the system's growth came from enrollment leaps at a few of the external campuses. The campus in Albuquerque, N.M., experienced a 62 percent increase to 136. The Hawaii campus reported a 25 percent increase to 521.
___bluebull Parker Center funding complete. Mr. and Mrs. Drayton McLane Jr. of Temple have made a contribution to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor that completes funding for the new Parker Academic Center. The $4 million facility houses the School of Business and School of Education. It is named for former university President Bobby Parker and his wife, Marietta.
___bluebull Six White Horses on TV. Riders of Hardin-Simmons University's Six White Horses program will be featured in a television show to be broadcast in January on the Outdoor Channel. Some filming already has begun, and additional footage will be shot during the university's homecoming Oct. 18-19.
___bluebull Prospective students invited to ETBU. East Texas Baptist University will host Tiger Day Oct. 5 for high school students and their parents. The schedule includes a campus life expo, financial aid seminar, campus tours and a football game. ___bluebull Associations merge. North Central Texas Baptist Area will cease to exist at the end of the month when three relatively small Baptist associations merge into a single mega-association. Wise, Montague and Jack Baptist associations will merge, reconstituting as Harvest Baptist Association in a special service at First Baptist Church of Bowie Sept. 29. The three associations had been grouped together as North Central Texas Baptist Area and served by a single director of missions. But each association had tried to maintain a separate identity, with its own moderator and executive board.
___bluebull DBU holds spiritual rush. More than 90 Dallas Baptist University students participated in Spiritual Rush Weekend Sept. 13-14. The weekend gave the students an opportunity to interact with faculty and staff, visit in their homes overnight, share meals together and participate in small group discussions with a spiritual emphasis. Forty families of DBU faculty and staff hosted students in their homes.
