CLOWNS were a big hit with children when the youth of First Church in Georgetown recently held a block party at the Georgetown Square Apartments. Hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and cookies brought even more smiles. A youth band provided music, and Youth Minister Brett Levy led a brief Bible study. Jeans and T-shirts donated by church members were given to the residents. School supplies and gift cards also were distributed in this ongoing ministry of the church.

___Retiring
___ Jerry Stratton, after four years as pastor of Adamsville Church in Lampasas and 16 years in the ministry. Stratton entered the ministry after a career in the military. In addition to his service in Lampasas, he also served as minister of education and administration at First Church in Copperas Cove and as director of missions of Tri-Rivers Area. He will be honored with a luncheon and time of fellowship following the morning service Sept. 15.

___Deaths
___ Viola Campbell, 87, Aug. 21 in El Paso. Appointed in 1940, she was an emeritus Southern Baptist missionary to Mexico and the Baptist Spanish Publishing House in El Paso. Her first assignment was to direct the Chinese Baptist Mission in El Paso. In 1942, she joined the staff of the Baptist Spanish Theological Seminary, also located in El Paso, as director of female students. She also taught Christian education, church administration and church recreation and drama. In 1946, the seminary located to Torreon, Mexico, and she went with it. In 1961, she joined the Baptist publishing house in El Paso and prepared the first Baptist Vacation Bible School curriculum written in Spanish. She retired in 1980 but continued directing worshops and seminars in Mexico and Central America. She was a member of First Church in El Paso.
___ Joe Brumbelow, 72, Aug. 30 in San Luis Pass. He was wade fishing with a friend, but he was discovered floating in the water about 20 minutes after the two men became separated. He was minister of pastoral care at First Church in Lake Jackson. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He had been pastor of churches in Clegg, Old Ocean, Houston, Dawson, Cypress and Corpus Christi. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie; sons, Stephen, David and Mark; sister, Myrtle Mae; brother, Bill; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
