___bluebull Joan Franklin was presented the Maloney Faculty Award during the Heritage Chapel Service at Wayland Baptist University Jan. 15. She is an assistant professor of business and education at the Wayland campus in Clovis, N.M. The award is presented to a Wayland faculty member who "exhibits outstanding qualities in academic excellence and leadership, who is an example of Christian commitment and dedication and who makes positive contributions to the lives of Wayland students."

THE TEXAS Baptist Historical Society presented the 2002 Church History Writing Awards to Thomas Potter (left) for "Faithful in East Texas" and Jack Goodman (right) on behalf of First Church in Austin for "Into His Marvelous Light." The awards were for church membership under 500 and church membership over 1,000 respectively.
Duncanville will hold a winter retreat Feb 28-March 1 at Mount Lebanon Encampment in Cedar Hill. Sherri Kulwicki of the Baptist General Convention of Texas' Women Reaching Texas office will speak on spiritual gifts. The fee of $25 includes lodging, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and literature. ___bluebull Elvin Gibson, 50th in the ministry, Jan. 5. The occassion was marked by a reception given by Harmony Church in Vidor, where he serves as transitional pastor.
___bluebull Doug Mogan, 20th as minister of music at First Church in Plano, Feb. 7.

___Deaths
___bluebull Denton Fluker, 48, Nov. 24, 2002, in Kirbyville. He had been minister of evangelism and outreach at Southcliff Church in Fort Worth and pastor of Ryanwood Church in Fort Worth, First Church of Briar in Azle, and, since 1993, Roganville Church in Kirbyville. He accepted Christ as his Savior at age 15 after watching a Billy Graham film at First Church in Lake Jackson. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Julianne; sons, Russell and Nathan; daughter, Shelby; and sisters, Ann Wallace and Linda Carr.
___bluebull Audrey Ferguson, 81, Dec. 13, 2002, in Georgetown. She was the wife of Texas pastor and professor Lindell Ferguson. She served several Texas associations as associational director of Women on Mission. For the last 11 years, she had been a member of First Church in Georgetown. She is survived by her husband of 63 years; daughters, Elaine Caskey and Linda Hodges; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mamie Cornett and Lucille Morris.
___bluebull Raymond Spencer, 38, Jan. 10 in Fort Worth. He was the first African-American full-time faculty member at Southwestern Seminary, elected in 1998. He taught "Principles of Biblical Preaching" and other preaching-related courses. In addition to his seminary responsibilities, he also was assistant pastor at Rising Star Church in Fort Worth. He previously taught at Dallas Baptist University and Houston Baptist University. He is survived by his parents, Helen and Manfred Spencer; sisters, Deborah Brown, Beverly Spencer and Verinda Spencer; and brothers, Michael and Manfred Jr.

___Events
___bluebull Children at First Church in Seguin went on their annual Search for the Christ Child Dec. 20. Parents drove them, with the help of a map provided by "angels," through the town to discover shepherds, wise men, King Herod, the innkeeper and more. They eventually found the Christ Child in a stable complete with live animals. Refreshments were served, and they sang Christmas carols.
___bluebull Wildwood Church in Mesquite will honor Christine Sandline with a lunch followed by a reception Jan. 26. She is retiring after 39 years as secretary.
___bluebull Daniel Vestal, coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will conduct workshops March 1 at Rolling Oaks Church in San Antonio. He also will be the guest speaker during the morning worship service March 2.
