Mission Oklahoma City is the second major event for 2003 announced in recent weeks by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Mission San Diego is set for May 8-11. At the announcement of the Oklahoma City crusade Jan. 21, Boone Powell and Jim Nichols were on hand to present a $100,000 "seed gift" to aid in preparations for the mission. Powell and Nichols were co-chairs of last fall's Metroplex Mission. Metroplex Mission also contributed a $100,000 gift to the San Diego mission.
___bluebull Oratorio Chorus to present premiere. The Southwestern Seminary Oratorio Chorus and the Fort Worth Symphony will present the American premiere of Alexander Gretchaninov's "Kvalite Boga," which means "Praise the Lord," at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. Conductor David Keith said this is the only sacred Russian piece ever written with full orchestration. The piece has been performed in Russia only once, at its premiere in 1915. Admission and parking are free, but tickets are required. Call (817) 923-1921, ext. 3160.
___bluebull SBC sets baptism and study goals. Southern Baptist Convention churches will be encouraged to baptize 1 million people, begin 100,000 evangelistic Bible study groups and start 2,500 churches in 2005. The emphasis is called "What Now, America?" Reaching the baptism goal would require more than twice the results recorded in the convention's best ever year. In 1972, SBC churches baptized 445,725 new believers. Bob White, executive director of the Georgia Baptist Convention, has been named chairman of the effort's national task force. The task force hopes to enlist 1 million Southern Baptists this year to commit to pray regularly for personal repentance, personal revival and a national spiritual awakening. Participants may register for the prayer initiative at www.namb.net/prayer.
___bluebull Florida school loosens SBC links. Southern Baptists are no longer required to enjoy majority status on Palm Beach Atlantic University's board of trustees and within the university's school of ministry faculty ranks. Trustees in November approved the changes in amendments to the bylaws. The university will continue to require, however, that the offices of president, vice president of religious life and dean of the school of ministry be held by Southern Baptists. University officials said the changes are necessary in light of the school's growing financial support and student enrollment from non-Southern Baptist evangelicals.
