___ Wayland names dean for Altus campus. Marty Akins has been named the dean of Wayland Baptist University's campus in Altus, Okla. Located on Altus Air Force Base, the campus began offering classes in November 2001 and already has an enrollment of 100 students. A native of Ballinger, Akins is former pastor of churches in Snyder, Alvarado, Brock, McKinney and Voca. Most recently, he has been a financial adviser for UBS Paine Webber in Lubbock. He holds an associate of arts degree from Temple College, a bachelor of arts degree from Howard Payne University, and master of divinity and doctor of philosophy degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
___ Building project gets Mabee grant. Baptist Child & Family Services has received a $1.2 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation toward the $9.8 million capital campaign to construct the South Texas Centre. The South Texas Centre is an innovative campus of non-profit agencies located at U.S. Highway 90 and Military Drive in western San Antonio that provides residential and community based services that support and strengthen children and families. The development was featured in the Baptist Standard's Sept. 23, 2002, issue. To meet the requirements of the challenge grant, Baptist Child & Family Services must raise the balance of the total fund-raising goal by Jan. 14, 2004. To date, commitments of $6.27 million have been made.
___ HPU ensemble picked for statewide event. Howard Payne University's Jazz Ensemble will perform in the opening session of the Association of Texas Small School Bands Feb. 12 in San Antonio. This is the first time a Howard Payne ensemble has been invited to perform for the event, held in conjunction with the Texas Music Educator's Association convention.
___ HSU names disabilities coordinator. Kay Ballard has been named coordinator of students with disabilities at Hardin-Simmons University. She has worked in education for 20 years as a teacher and educational diagnostician. She will work with HSU students to find assistance for issues such as hearing difficulties, wheelchairs and have vision problems.
___ DBU to honor Ku. Dallas Baptist University will award an honorary doctor of divinity degree to Hsien Ting (Harry) Ku during convocation Jan. 29. Guest speaker for the service will be Carl Hunker, former president of Taiwan Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Ku was the first Chinese native to join Southern Baptist missionaries' work in Shantung, where he worked as personal secretary to the president of North China Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1971, Ku and his family moved to Dallas, where he worked with W.A. Criswell at First Baptist Church of Dallas.
___ UMHB names alumni director. Robby Jackson, has been named director of alumni relations at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He is a 1987 graduate of the university, with a degree in business administration. For eight years, he worked for LifeWay Christian Stores in Houston; Tampa, Fla.; and Nashville, Tenn. For the last two years, he has been a partner with Samford Enterprises in Tyler.
___ UMHB receives award. The Belton Area Chamber of Commerce presented the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor the Chairman's Award of Excellence in recognition of service to the community at the annual Chamber Awards Banquet. Chamber of Commerce Chairman Roy Heartfield said the university was chosen because of its "continual willingness to be involved in the community."
___ Summer with C.S. Lewis offered. University of Mary Hardin-Baylor English professor George Musacchio will teach summer courses in the home of C.S. Lewis, The Kilns, in Oxford, England. The summer seminars, titled "Doing Good: C.S. Lewis on Moral Values," will be offered during July. Class size is limited to eight per week. Participants will live in the C.S. ___ Wayland has new location in Phoenix. Wayland Baptist University's Phoenix campus opened a new location Jan. 14. The new downtown location will expand Wayland's presence in Phoenix from Luke Air Force Base to reach the civilian population as well. The facility features office space and four classrooms. Wayland, based in Plainview, operates 12 satellite campuses catering primarily to adult students.
___ CPE program graduates five. Baptist Health System's Institute of Health Education graduated five students from its Clinical Pastoral Education program Jan. 24. The graduates represent diverse faith expressions, including Baptist, Catholic and Assembly of God. They are Carlos Charco, Albert Salinas, Connie Jimenez, Aaron Grimaldo and Ruben Trevino.
___ River Ministry training set. The Baptist General Convention of Texas has scheduled three regional training conferences for first-time participants in River Ministry and those who would like to know more about River Ministry. Each session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dates and locations are Feb. 22, Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler; March 1, College Heights Baptist Church, Plainview; March 8, Primera Iglesia Bautista, San Antonio. The BGCT also will offer on-site Border Retreats for groups already assigned projects this year. ___ Wayland adds master of education. Wayland Baptist University has added a master of education degree program for teachers or students training to be teachers. The 36-credit-hour program offers tracks in elementary education, middle-school certification and high school certification.
___ ETBU invites prospective students. East Texas Baptist University will host "Shadow Day" for prospective students Feb. 6-7. Guests will receive a two-day opportunity to meet current students, faculty and staff. For more information, call (903) 923-2008.
