___ Giltner named prof of year. Beverly Giltner, professor of physics and computer science and dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, has been named Professor of the Year for 2002 at Dallas Baptist University. Giltner began her career at DBU in 1969, after becoming the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from Texas Christian University. She established the first physics curriculum at DBU as well as the computer science major. She and her husband, Wilfred, are longtime active members of Fairview Baptist Church in Grand Prairie.
___ Newman to head Baylor Press. Carey Newman, director of church relations at Baylor University, has been named director of Baylor University Press. As part of the Baylor 2012 strategic plan, Newman has been charged with growing the university press into a major publisher of academic titles. He announced a goal of publishing 25 to 30 books annually by 2012. A Baylor doctoral graduate, Newman previously was senior editor for academic books at Westminster John Knox Press. He and his wife, Leanne, are members of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco.
___ Truett to launch journal. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University will launch its Truett Journal of Church and Mission this spring. The journal will target pastors, ministers of missions, missionaries and laypeople with articles, sermons, interviews and book reviews by students, alumni and faculty. The inaugural issue will be distributed to 5,000 churches without charge and will move to a subscription basis eventually. To subscribe, call (254) 710-6745.
___ UMHB spins Big Daddy Weave. The Christian group Big Daddy Weave will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Walton Chapel at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. General admission is $8, and tickets may be purchased at the Information Station on campus, LifeWay Store in Temple, Greater Gifts in Belton and Family Christian Stores in Killeen. The concert is in conjunction with UMHB's Preview Weekend for high school students and their parents. Brothers Mike and Jay Weaver join Jeremy Redmon, Joe Shirk and Jeff Jones to create an eclectic pop-rock sound.
___ Female forebear feted. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and the Belton chapter of the Daughters of the Republic will honor Elli Moore Townsend Feb. 5 by placing a marker at her gravesite at North Belton Cemetery. Townsend graduated from Baylor Female College in 1879, worked at the college for 60 years and was a founding member of the Daughters of the Republic in Belton. She is most noted for starting the first college work-study program west of the Mississippi in 1892 to assist young women wanting to get a college education. The program was called the Cottage Home System.
___ Evangelism put to practice. Texas Baptists witnessed 184 professions of faith in Christ through personal evangelism efforts centered on the Texas Evangelism Conference last week. Volunteers, coordinated by the Center for Strategic Evangelism of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, witnessed to people in apartment complexes and a park. They also handed out more than 100 blankets to homeless people during the cold, windy days.
