___ J.R. Williams, 76, Feb. 18 in Abilene. At the time of his death, he was pastor of First Church in Peacock. During his 58 years of ministry, he also was pastor of First Church Mission in Spur, Midway Church in Afton, Berry Flat Church in O'Donnell, Mount Blanco Church in Crosbyton, Calvary Church in Floydada, Courtney Church in Stanton, First Church in Welch, First Church in Rule and First Church in Goree. He was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nell; son, Marlon; daughters, D'Lynn Kirkland, LaNell Trussell and Wynette Yarbrough; sister, Jessie Alldredge; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
___ Ed Byers, 89, Feb. 24 in Nashville, Tenn. Byers was pastor of First churches in Dawn, Chillocothe, Clarendon and Shamrock. He also was a former trustee of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board, a superintendent of missions with the Northwest Baptist Convention and served as a Mission Service Corps volunteer in Dallas. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mattie; daughters, Peggy Highsmith and Camille Piland; brother, Joe; sister, Rossia Short; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
___ Clyde Childers, 89, March 2 in San Antonio. Childers spent 30 years as a Texas Baptist pastor and 21 years as a development officer, representing Hardin-Simmons University and later the Baptist Memorial Hospital System in San Antonio. He came to the administration of HSU as assistant to the president for the late Elwin Skiles, and was elevated to vice president for development the following year. He served in that capacity for 10 years. While there, he led the Profile for Progress fund-raising effort that netted $26 million, the most ambitious ever for the school at that time. In 1981, he became the first full-time director of development for the Baptist Memorial Hospital System in San Antonio, retiring after seven years at the age of 75. Prior to his work at HSU, he was pastor of Westbrook Church in Westbrook, First Church in Ozona and Riverside Church in San Antonio. He also was a former first vice president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and was president of the Texas Baptist Development Officers' Association. In addition, he served as a trustee at the University of Corpus Christi, Howard Payne University and Paisano Baptist Encampment; as a member of the BGCT Executive Board for 12 years; and as a director of the Baptist Church Loan Corporation. Childers also served as a director of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board for 12 years. He was a member of Trinity Church in San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lois. He is survived by his sisters, Geneva Blanchard and Helen Sadler.
