___ Kentucky seminary under way. Baptist Seminary of Kentucky, which launched its first year of classes last fall, held an inaugural convocation March 9 at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington. President Greg Earwood told more than 400 participants: "The seminary is founded on historically held Baptist principles--the authority of the Scriptures, the priesthood of all believers, the separation of church and state, local church autonomy, freedom of conscience under the Lordship of Christ and an affirmation of both the sovereignty of God and the free will of humankind." The school was established to help provide "more moderate, progressive opportunities" for seminary education in the region, he said.
___ Deaf ministry pioneer Asbridge dies. Leonard Asbridge, one of five founders of the Southern Baptist Convention for the Deaf, died of heart failure in Jackson, Miss., March 5. He was 96. He was left deaf at the age of 7 after a bout with spiral meningitis. He was a printer, but he also spent nearly 20 years as a Baptist minister to the deaf and a "circuit rider," preaching and establishing new deaf congregations throughout Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Asbridge and his wife, Doris, who also was hearing impaired, were two of the original five founders of the Southern Baptist Convention for the Deaf in 1948. The idea grew from a need to have something similar to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting but geared toward deaf people.
___ Singer Chapman to appear on SBC program. Award-winning Christian recording artist and author Steven Curtis Chapman will be the featured guest on "At Home--Live!" March 20 at 10 p.m. Central time. The program is produced by the Southern Baptist Convention's Fort Worth-based FamilyNet TV network.
