Around the state
___bluebull Five Texans were among 27 chaplains and pastoral counselors receiving endorsement recently from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Hospital chaplains receiving endorsement were Rebecca Andrews, Karen Black and Mark Elder of Baylor Health Care System in Dallas and Jennifer Bordenet of Valley Baptist Health System in Harlingen. Alan Rogers of the U.S. Navy chaplain candidate program also received endorsement.
___bluebull Patricia Dominguez, associate professor of nursing at Houston Baptist University, has been named one of Houston's outstanding nurses by the Texas Nurses Association, District 9.

___bluebull Members of Harvest Acres Church in Mineola, aided by a couple of Texas Baptist Builders, recently tore down existing walls of the sanctuary and enlarged it to hold 23 pews. The church also recently installed a Carillon Bell System. Butch Gott is pastor.
___bluebull The Friona Ministerial Alliance is sponsoring three nights of better understanding Islam March 23 and 30 and April 6 at 6 p.m. in the Friona Junior High School Auditorium. The educational event is free of charge and no offering will be taken. Each evening's program will be about an hour long. After a time of music and prayer, Lamuel Salik, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hereford, will deliver the lecture. Salik was born and raised in Pakistan and is a naturalized U.S. citizen of 22 years. He has a bachelor's degree in Islamic studies from Karachi University in Pakistan. There will be a question-and-answer session after each program for participants who elect to stay.
___bluebull The weekday children's ministry of First Church in Waco will celebrate its 50th birthday April 27 with a brunch at 9 a.m. and a special recognition during the service that morning. A lunch will follow in the fellowship hall and the courtyard playground. Lunch reservations are requested by April 8 by calling (254) 752-3000. Scott Walker is pastor.

___Deaths
___bluebull J.E. Johnson, 95, Feb. 22 in Temple. Johnson was the recipient of the Keeter Award, the highest award bestowed on a Hardin-Simmons University alumnus, in 1976. A former state representative and mayor pro-tem of Temple, he was chairman of the Profile for Progress building and endowment campaign during the HSU presidency of Elwin Skiles. He was a member of First Church in Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Thelma, in 1996. He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Myra Mewhinney, two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his son, Laurens; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
___bluebull Harvey Albright, 82, Feb. 23 in Norman, Okla. A Texas native and Hardin-Simmons University graduate, Albright was a pastor in Oklahoma for many years including a 33-year tenure at Dickson Church in Midwest City. After retiring, he and his wife volunteered as missionary associates to the Baptist Village in Israel. He is survived by his wife, Lonella; daughters, Mary Varner and Angela Albright; and five grandchildren.
___bluebull Boyce Evans, 79, March 15 in Lubbock. He was a former member of Hardin-Simmons University's board of trustees and board of development. He also was a member of the HSU School of Music Foundation and a recipient of the school's Keeter award for distinguished alumni. He was employed by the school for four years in the late 1960s as a field development representative. Prior to working for the university, he was a pastor in Abernathy, Midland, Mansfield and Seagraves. Following his university work, he was a full-time evangelist. He was a member of First Church in Lubbock. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Evan and Slim; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
