Houston Baptist University students serve on border
___MISSION--They traveled to a retreat center for spring break, but 43 Houston Baptist University students didn't go to rest.
___From a base at Valley Baptist Retreat, the students traveled to lead worship services, offer medical services, perform co
nstruction projects and engage in evangelism.
___The week began with four worship services in Rio Grande Valley churches where students led drama and worship and gave testimonies. The medical, construction and evangelism projects began the next day.
___Medical teams, led by five doctors and nurses, helped more than 280 people in three days. In addition to healing wounds and infections, physician John Joe also helped heal spiritual aches when he led one of his patients to faith in Jesus Christ.
___The construction team renovated two old houses purchased by a church. Both houses eventually will provide space for Sunday School classes. Even though they were not able to paint due to bad weather, the team removed tile, cleaned inside and out and scraped the houses to prepare for painting.
___The evangelism team joined forces with other Baptist Student Ministries groups to hand out flyers and produce a video at South Texas Community College. The video, "Jaywalking," was produced by asking students to do crazy things in order to get a prize. The activities drew 14 new faces to the BSM's Wednesday luncheon.
___HBU students also helped the BSM at the University of Texas Pan Am, including leading an outdoor concert, giving testimonies and preaching.
___After full days of work, the students led Vacation Bible School in the evenings.
___Colette Cross, student minister at HBU, trained the student missionaries for five weeks prior to the trip. "I reminded students ... our main objective was to go and glorify Christ, and God needed our feet to take the gospel to that area of the valley and Mexico."
