___bluebull DBU names top adviser. Marilyn Edwards, assistant professor of psychology, has been named Dallas Baptist University's Adviser of the Year. The member of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas teaches four undergraduate psychology courses and advises numerous students. Her work as a student adviser, she said, is a way of "sending Christ into the world."
___bluebull Social work workshop planned. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will present a workshop on "An Ethical Lens to View Spirituality and Religion in Social Work Practice" Saturday, April 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Featured speaker will be Gaynor Yancey, assistant professor of social work at Baylor University. She will focus on current issues of spirituality and religion in social work. Supported by the Genevieve Mason fund, the workshop will be presented free of charge to area social worker professionals and will include continuing education credit. Registration will be limited to the first 200 applicants. Register by calling (254) 295-4555.
___bluebull Cook in concert at UMHB. The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor will present Christin Cook in concert April 10 at 7 p.m. in a large tent in the quadrangle of campus. The concert is free and open to the public. Cook, a Texas native, plays guitar and piano, sings and writes songs. She started her first band at the age of 12. Her debut album, "Live Loud: Scream Worship," was released in May 2001.
___bluebull Poll shows shifts on death penalty. A statewide poll reported by the Dallas Morning News March 16 shows some movement in Texans' attitudes regarding capital punishment. Three-fourths of Texans still support the death penalty, but a nearly equal percentage would like to give juries the option of sentencing convicted killers to life without parole instead. That sentencing option currently is not available under Texas law. Support for the death penalty in Texas has remained relatively steady for the past decade. A majority of Texans (60 percent) also support the death penalty for those who committed murder at age 17.
