___ Gambling opposition urged. Phil Strickland, coordinator of Christian ethics and public life for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, has asked Texas Baptists to write or call their state legislators, encouraging them to vote against legalizing new forms of gambling. Bills before the Legislature would authorize expansion of several forms of gambling, from video terminals, to Keno to Indian casinos, Strickland said. ___ HBTS gives Founders' Day awards. Hispanic Baptist Theological School presented six Founders' Awards during Founder's Day ceremonies April 10. Awards for dedicated service went to Jim Fowler, a Mission Service Corps volunteer, and Rusty Waller, bivocational pastor of First Baptist Church of Gordonville. The award for philanthropy was given to Paul and Katy Piper of Waco, who have funded a major tuition scholarship program. An award for institutional leadership was given to Marv Knox, editor of the Baptist Standard. Awards for dedicated church service were given to Trinity Baptist Church of San Antonio and Memorial Baptist Church of Taylor. Both churches have been strong financial supporters of HBTS. Memorial is a church that averages 60 in Sunday morning worship but has given $20,000 to HBTS in the past year.
___ DBU honors Norris and Parks. Dallas Baptist University granted honorary doctorates April 2 to Harold Norris and Alva Parks. Norris served the university as chief financial officer from 1988 to 2000, helping the school eliminate a $5.8 million debt. Parks, a former professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, served DBU from 1993 to 1996 as executive vice president.
___ Bawcom honored. Jerry Bawcom, president at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, was honored by Camp Fire USA for work done at the university supporting the youth of Central Texas. These programs include chemistry camp, conservatory choir, swim programs, individual educational instruction for the young and sports camps.
___ Logsdon scholarship given. Frances Petry, a 1957 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University, has established the Arthur and Naomi Cunningham Endowed Memorial Scholarship in honor of her parents, who were residents of Seminole and Canyon from 1947 until their deaths. The scholarships will aid students in the Logsdon School of Theology who are preparing for missions ministries.
___ Nordeman in concert at HBU. Dove Award-winning artist Nichole Nordeman will be in concert with Andrew Peterson at Houston Baptist University May 8 at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $10, and groups may buy 10 and get one free. Tickets may be purchased in person at the HBU Bookstore and at Lifeway Christian Bookstore on the Southwest Freeway or online at www.getquickticks.com.
___ Tarleton BSM to get makeover. Volunteers are scheduled to renovate the Tarleton University Baptist Student Ministries building this summer. The current facilities hold up to 175 people, but the program currently serves about 250 people at a time. The renovation will open the building for ministry to almost 300 people. Volunteers, including Texas Baptist Men workers, will do most of the work for the estimated $35,000 effort. ___ Noles named nursing dean. Jan Noles has been named dean of the Abilene Intercollegiate School of Nursing. She currently directs the graduate program for the consortium that serves Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University. The current nursing school is a direct descendant of a school formed in 1927 by West Texas Baptist Sanitarium.
