Missionary murdered in Guatemala
___MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (ABP)--A Christian missionary with ties to Southern Baptists was shot and killed March 28 during a robbery in Central America.
___Todd Fields, 41, had been a missionary for 13 years with Global Outreach International of Tupelo, Miss. His parents, Bob and Edwina Fields of Mount Vernon, Ky., are retired missionaries to Israel who served through the Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board.
___Todd Fields, who was serving as a missionary in Honduras, was driving middle- and high-school students to a retreat in Guatemala when a group of robbers shot him to force the van to stop.
___"Todd saw the guns and realized what was happening," said Norm Lytle, a friend of the family. "They tried to force him off the road, and he resisted."
___Struck twice, Fields was able to pull over without wrecking, Lytle said. The five robbers pushed Fields into the aisle and drove the van into a wooded area where they tied and robbed those in the van.
___Fields is survived by his wife, Lynell, and daughters Savannah, 14, and Sophia, 10.
___Bob and Edwina Fields, who have a background in counseling, were sent by the IMB to help counsel missionaries after a shooting at a Baptist hospital in Yemen in December.
