___ Patterson ponders Southwestern. A May 8 story in the Raleigh News & Observer headlined "Seminary leader considers move" noted the "armchair speculation" around Wake Forest, N.C., that Paige Patterson could be headed back to Texas to replace Ken Hemphill as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. "I'm hopeful they won't make me make a decision. But I know how things work. It's possible I would end up being asked. Needless to say, it's an intensely uncomfortable time in my life" the paper quoted Patterson, currently president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Denny Autrey, chairman of Southwestern's presidential search committee, told the News & Observer the committee was to meet May 10 to consider some names. But "speculations that it's a done deal are ludicrous," Autrey said. Of Patterson, he added: "He'll be in the pool of those recommended." Patterson also told the paper: "Contrary to speculation about me, I'm more a man of peace than war. I don't like conflict. But things are not fully settled there (at Southwestern). Whoever goes there will have some confrontation to deal with."
