SBC posts favor SBTC churches
___NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Nine Texans are among a slate of nominees for election to Southern Baptist Convention boards and commissions when the SBC meets in Phoenix next month.
___Of the nine, only two are members of churches uniquely aligned with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and seven are members of churches uniquely or dually aligned with the rival Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
___Nominees are selected annually by the SBC committee on nominations. Texans serving on that committee this year were Reagan Cooksey of Northside Baptist Church in Huntsville and Jerry McPeak of Wilshire Park Baptist Church in Midland.
___Texans nominated are:
___ Roy Sparkman, a layman from First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls (uniquely BGCT), nominated for another term on the SBC Executive Committee.
___ Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano (dually aligned), nominated for a second term on the SBC Executive Committee.
___ Ron Murff, a layman from Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano (dually aligned), replacing Gene Hawkins of Lubbock on the Annuity Board.
___ Debora Brunson, wife of Mac Brunson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas (dually aligned), replacing David Evans of Amarillo on the International Mission Board.
___ Kyle Cox, director of missions for Galveston Baptist Association and member of Nassau Bay Baptist Church in Houston (uniquely SBTC), nominated for a second term on the IMB.
___ Don O'Neal, layman from First Baptist Church of Euless (uniquely SBTC), replacing Miles Seaborn of Fort Worth on the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary board.
___ Royal Smith, layman from First Baptist Church of Dallas (dually aligned), nominated for a second term on the Southwestern Seminary board.
___ Rick Lineberger, pastor of First Baptist Church of Grapevine (uniquely BGCT), replacing David George of Arlington on the board of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
___ Gene Kendrick, pastor of Mims Baptist Church in Conroe (uniquely SBTC), replacing Steven Wright of Houston on the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
___Meanwhile, SBC President Jack Graham announced his appointments to committees that function during the SBC annual meeting. These appointments do not require election at the annual meeting.
___In Texas, none of Graham's appointees are members of churches uniquely aligned with the BGCT. Three are from churches uniquely aligned with the SBTC, and three are from churches dually aligned with the SBTC and BGCT.
___Among Graham's appointees are two people from each state convention to serve on the committee on committees, which in turn nominates members of the committee on nominations. The two Texans named to the committee on committees by Graham are Richard Jones of Calvary Baptist in Longview (uniquely SBTC) and Jack Pogue of First Baptist Church in Dallas (dually aligned).
___Graham also named Russ Barksdale, pastor of The Church on Rush Creek in Arlington (uniquely SBTC), to the SBC tellers committee.
___Texans named to the SBC credentials committee are Chad Barnes, pastor of New Life Baptist Church in Cooper (uniquely SBTC); Deron Biles of First Baptist Church of Colleyville (dually aligned); Jeff Meyers of First Baptist Church of Colleyville (dually aligned); and Davies Vanpool, pastor of Abbot Baptist Church in Abbot (uniquely SBTC).
___Churches dually aligned have made a decision to loosen ties with the BGCT, and most dually aligned churches give the bulk of their mission money through the SBTC, retaining only minimal relation to the BGCT.
