___ Virus suspected at Wayland. Food poisoning has been ruled out as the cause of an illness that sent 26 Wayland Baptist University students to the hospital emergency room April 30. After investigation by the Plainview-Hale County Health Department, officials declared the students most likely were sickened by a virus.
___ Learning Center to graduate 11. The Baptist Learning Center of South Texas will honor 11 graduates May 13 at 7 p.m. The graduates have received degrees or certificates at the Learning Center through affiliated programs with Howard Payne University and Hardin-Simmons University's Logsdon School of Theology. The South Texas institution also will hold a silent auction and concert as a fundraiser May 22 at the University Center of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The concert will feature soprano Nancy Lanmon Cooke.
___ DBU holds Oak Cliff dinner. Dallas Baptist University will hold its 15th annual Oak Cliff Partnership Dinner May 13. The Good Samaritan Award will be presented to E.K. Bailey, pastor of Concord Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, and the Oak Cliff Tribune. The newspaper's publisher, Mark Housewright, will accept the award. Proceeds from the dinner fund scholarships for DBU students from the Oak Cliff area of Dallas.
___ Senior adult conference at ETBU. East Texas Baptist University will host its 14th annual Senior Adult Conference June 2-5 with preaching, Bible teaching, seminars, games, music, food and fellowship. A Tuesday night concert will feature Southern gospel artists Ivan Parker, Sue Dodge and Aaron Wilburn, as well as a 100-voice choir. For more information, call (903) 923-2068.
___ Senior Saints Summit at UMHB. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's annual Senior Saints Summit is scheduled for May 19-22. Guest speakers will be Paul Powell, dean of Truett Seminary, and Bill Carrell, chairman of the religion department at UMHB. Banquet entertainment will be provided by humorist Lou Brown. The conference is open to anyone 55 or older. The Singing Men of Texas also will perform May 20, at 6:30 p.m. Housing for out-of-town participants is available at the university. ___ Wayland group to visit Spain. Forty-seven students and faculty members from Wayland Baptist University will spend 12 days on a mission trip in Spain next month. The Texans will present concerts, do prayerwalks and dialogue with local residents. The trip is coordinated through the Baptist General Convention of Texas partnership missions office. The Wayland team hopes to help boost the identity of Baptist churches in the region where Baptists are a little-known minority.
___ HSU names associate dean. Michael Monhollon has been named associate dean of the Kelley College of Business at Hardin-Simmons University. He succeeds Coleman Patterson, who is resuming full-time teaching duties. Michael Monhollon also will serve as interim dean of the school until a permanent successor has been named for his father, Jimmie Monhollon, who also is returning to full-time teaching.
___ UMHB nursing dean retires. Grace Labaj will retire this month as dean of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor School of Nursing. A 33-year veteran of the university, she was among the initial nursing faculty on staff when the Scott & White Hospital nursing program moved to UMHB in 1968.During her tenure, the program has grown from 28 students to 166, and 1,450 students have graduated from the program.
___ Wayland names commencement speakers. Barbara McAninch delivered the commencement address during May 10 ceremonies at Wayland Baptist University. McAninch, a Wayland alumna, is senior vice president and chief legal officer for Snelling & Snelling of Dallas. Graduating senior Mike Smith of Kingwood gave the student address. Degrees were granted to 120 students.
