Baptist Standard History and Mission

Since its humble beginning in Honey Grove, Texas, in 1888, the Baptist Standard has fulfilled its mission to inform, inspire, equip and empower people to follow Christ and expand the Kingdom of God. The pens of distinguished and capable editors have left a strong and indelible influence upon Baptist doctrine, cooperation, missions, ministry and identity.

The phenomenal numerical multiplication of Baptists across the thousands of square miles of Texas can be attributed, at least in part, to the solid impact of a news journal common to the churches and favorable to the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ mission and evangelistic emphasis. The Standard has communicated distinctive doctrine and polity, helping the BGCT to prosper and flourish in its march to change the world for Christ.

True to its frontier heritage, Texas Baptists history has been filed with controversy and animosity, and the Standard has suffered its share of the attacks. But Texas Baptists have preserved freedom of the press, not for the sake of the newspaper, but for the sake of the convention. The Standard has held its freedom in trust, so that in telling the truth without fear of favor, it has bestowed freedom upon all Texas Baptists--- freedom to know and understand the events and issues that have shaped their common lives together. In preserving this freedom, Texas Baptists and the Standard have honored their spiritual birthright to soul competency, soul freedom, the priesthood of all believers and church autonomy.

The Baptist Standard, strong because it is free, has been the major medium of communication to the minds and hearts of Texas Baptists and society at large. With a birthright in the past and a footprint in the future, the Standard has carved out a providential place to inform, inspire, and enable God’s army in all its many organizational structures to carry out the Great Commission.

The Baptist Standard is dependent upon friends like you to help her remain strong and free. Please consider supporting the Standard with your financial gifts so that future generations may experience the benefits of a free press, dedicated to the glory of Christ.

Every donation we receive is a much needed gift that we treat as a sacred trust. Our donors honor the Baptist Standard with donations to the “Let There Be Light Annual Fund.”
