Around: 'Walk' snares shoes for orphans

First Baptist Church in Perryton created a Christmas tree from donated shoes for orphan children. The church has held a events to benefit barefoot walk200 First Baptist Church in Perryton raised more than $16,000 through its Walk in Love Barefoot Benefit.Buckner International’s Shoes for Orphan Souls ministry including, a “Walk in Love Barefoot Benefit,” which saw children and adults walk barefoot to help raise funds to buy shoes for children around the world who have no shoes. The church raised more than $16,000 through the efforts of 98 participants.

Dallas Baptist University conferred degrees to 506 graduates during its winter commencement ceremony. Two hundred fifty-five students received bachelor’s degrees, 240 received master’s degrees, eight received doctorates and a three received associate degrees. Wright Lassiter, chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, was the commencement speaker. He received an honorary doctor of humanities degree from DBU, where he also serves as distinguished adjunct professor of management.

hpu poverty simulation350Dan Humeniuk, assistant professor of social work and chair of HPU’s criminal justice, social work and sociology, and students Jessica Ferrell-Raborn, Shannon Bundy, Paula Johnson, Jeffery Fennell and Rebekah Steadman participated in Mission Waco’s Poverty Simulation.Five Howard Payne University social work students participated in Mission Waco’s Poverty Simulation, a weekend experience created to challenge students to see the world from a poor person’s perspective. Participants slept outdoors and experienced what it is like to find meals with very little money.
