New column collection to strengthen BGCT bonds

The Baptist Standard is launching a new feature, “Texas Baptist Voices: Columns from BGCT Leaders,” beginning this week.

We will highlight “Texas Baptist Voices” in the Baptist Standard, which we email to subscribers every Monday. We also will post it on this website.

“Texas Baptist Voices” includes “In Touch,” the column written by David Hardage, executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas’s Executive Board. Jeff Johnson, the BGCT’s president and pastor of First Baptist Church in Commerce, also will contribute.

Leaders of the Bivocational/Small Church Association and the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas have agreed to participate. We hope, in time, to involve all the racial, ethnic and special-focus groups affiliated with the convention.

The Standard is providing the service to the BGCT and its affinity groups for free. We have asked leaders who choose to participate to write at least one column per month, and they may write as often as every week.

The primary purpose of “Texas Baptist Voices” is simple: We hope to strengthen the bonds that unite Texas Baptists.

The columns serve two functions.

First, they enable the leaders to communicate directly—and without cost—to the members of their affinity groups. This will help members know more about the work and ministry of their group. And by bringing them into the Standard and onto our website, it will help them learn more about the overall scope of the BGCT and its myriad churches.

Second, they enable Texas Baptists to learn more about the affinity groups, the work they do and the issues important to them. For example, we hope African-American Texas Baptists will grow to understand their Hispanic Texas Baptist sisters and brothers better. And members of small churches whose pastors are bivocational will see what life is like for members of Filipino, Vietnamese and cowboy churches.

We’ve asked column writers to promote Baptist Standard subscriptions among members of their groups. The cost is just $10 per year for 52 weekly digital subscriptions, delivered to recipients’ email boxes.
