Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact eric.black@baptiststandard.com.

Bill Skaar: Choose Joy (Philippians 1:1-30)

Bill Skaar, pastor of First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, contrasts happiness with joy. For Christians, joy always is present as part of the fruit of the Spirit but not be seen if the Christian is not choosing joy. Happiness depends on outward circumstances, but joy is an internal choice despite or regardless of circumstances. Skaar offers Paul as an example of someone who chose joy despite being persecuted for following Jesus. The sermon transcript is available here. To listen to Skaar’s sermon, click here.

This sermon was delivered during the morning worship services at First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie on July 7, 2019 as part of a series titled “Joy for Life.”
