Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Brent Taylor: In the Beginning (Genesis 1-2)
Brent Taylor, senior pastor of First Baptist Church at the Fields in Carrollton, Texas, opens a sermon series on the story of the entire Bible with an examination of the first two chapters of the Bible: Genesis 1-2. He focuses particularly on Genesis 1:1, which establishes a definite origin and originator for all things. This originator existed before all things and acted definitively to create all things. That God is the named creator and originator of all things establishes God’s ownership of and claim on all things. This beginning point is crucial for understanding the rest of the story.
This sermon was delivered during the morning worship services at First Baptist Church at the Fields in Carrollton on September 9, 2018 in honor of Memorial Day. It was the first of a 9-part series titled “Long Story, Short.”
Taylor described the series: “Because we have so many new people who have never been involved in church, I decided to preach the entire Bible in nine weeks. It is a high-level look at the story of Scripture and is designed to give the listener a basic understanding of the theme that runs throughout the pages of God’s word. The series also was helpful to longtime churchgoers who understand the parts of Scripture but didn’t have a basic understanding of how the entire story fits together. I used icons each week to symbolize the story and reviewed those week by week to keep the overall theme in mind.” The outline for this sermon is available here.
