Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Daniel “Tiny” Dominguez: Praise Through Lament (Lamentations 4-5)

Daniel “Tiny” Dominguez, pastor of Community Heights Church in Lubbock, opened with an illustration from the movie Groundhog Day. The main character did everything he could to save a man’s life, but to no avail. In response, the character struggled to accept fate. Dominguez compares the character’s lament to the struggle expressed in Lamentations.

In Lamentations, the Israelite’s true colors come out during their suffering. Their suffering and lament resulted from their sin. Using his own health and diet struggles, Dominguez exhorted his church to “remember the suffering sin brings.”

Sin leads to suffering, and suffering leads to lament—turning dancing into mourning. Jeremiah, the writer of Lamentations, determined to praise God anyway. Dominguez concluded the sermon with a personal testimony of seeing God in his own recent time of struggle and lament.

This sermon was delivered Aug. 29, 2021, for the morning worship service of Community Heights Church in Lubbock.
