Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact [email protected].

David Dykes: Three Strikes and You’re NOT Out (John 4:1-19)

David Dykes, pastor of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, examines in three points the story of the Samaritan woman who encountered Jesus at the well. He addresses gender and race issues still relevant today. He points out that both Jesus and the woman—who Dykes nicknames “Samantha”—struck out in relation to the culture and religious rules of their day. Dykes finishes with the “takeaway truth” that Jesus valued the woman and overlooked social, ethnic and moral taboos to communicate the gospel to her. Video, audio, and text for this sermon are available here.

This sermon was delivered during the morning worship services at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler on November 25, 2018. It is Part 18 in the series “Believe & Live: Exploring the Gospel of John.”
