Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Jacob West: A Unifying Presence (John 14:16-21)
Jacob West, pastor of First Baptist Church in Plainview, pointed to the extent of loneliness in the world despite all the things that tie people together. Several of Jesus’ disciples shared the bound of fishing as an occupation. People today also have certain jobs in common, as well as pastimes like golf, quilting or video gaming.

People also are united by things like family and shared spaces, but such common bonds don’t take care of everything. Jesus promised the Helper—the Holy Spirit—“to eliminate loneliness” and “establish an eternal bond” with God “nothing can break.”
The Holy Spirit also maintains the bond of unity among believers in Jesus, even during deeply divided times.
This sermon was delivered Aug. 8, 2021, for the morning worship service of First Baptist Church in Plainview as part of a series titled “Tied Together.”
