Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact [email protected].

Mark Rotramel: Pain Management (Psalm 46)

Mark Rotramel, pastor of First Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas, responded to the mass shooting that took place in El Paso on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019. After being up most of the night absorbing the pain of the mass shooting via the news, Rotramel scrapped his prepared sermon and wrote a new sermon in response. He addressed the community’s pain. He responded to questions people raise when these tragedies happen, asking a particularly poignant question about what we keep doing to each other. Rotramel’s sermon is a much-needed word as mass shootings increase in frequency.

This sermon was delivered on Aug. 4, 2019 during the morning worship services at First Baptist Church in El Paso.
