Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact [email protected].
Pastor Oscar Epps Sr.: Can God Depend on You? (Luke 10:1-2)
Pastor Oscar Epps Sr., senior pastor of Community Missionary Baptist Church in DeSoto, challenged his hearers with their personal responsibility to prove themselves dependable for God’s kingdom. Christians, those who have received God’s grace and mercy, ought to be available to God who sent them grace and mercy.
Ideas and dreams can become realities because of dependable people. Epps points to Salem Church as an example. He then calls out those who think it’s the pastor’s job to grow the church, telling them they need to go out and bring people into the church.
Epps asked: “Can God depend on you not to turn back? Can he depend on you” to go out into the community? He issued several more direct challenges to his hearers.
This sermon was delivered on Aug. 14, 2016, at Salem Institutional Baptist Church in Dallas, for its 128th church anniversary.
