Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact [email protected].

Ryan Chandler: God Remembers (Genesis 8:1, 15-22)

Ryan Chandler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Orange, Texas, wonders how one of the most important stories in the Bible—Noah and the flood—became a staple of children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School despite the horrors of it. Chandler deals with the nature of God and the reason for the flood in some challenging statements. The central verse—Genesis 8:1—is encouragement to those who feel forgotten. From it, Chandler issues a call to his congregation.

This sermon was delivered on March 10, 2019 during the morning worship service of Trinity Baptist Church in Orange. It opened a series titled “And God Remembered” inspired when Ryan and his brother Ross, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Marble Falls, reflected on the fact that 40 percent of the homes in Orange still are not repaired after Hurricane Harvey struck in 2017. Each sermon in the series was accompanied by a service project in the community to restore homes.
