Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Steve Dominy: God Has the Last Word (John 21:15-19)
Steve Dominy, Texas Baptist Area 8 Representative and interim pastor of Webb Baptist Church in Arlington, recounted Jesus’ restoration of Peter. Peter, despite his promise not to deny Jesus, swore three times he didn’t know Jesus—just minutes later. After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to the disciples and restored Peter, so Peter’s failure would not be the last word about him.
Jesus’ restoration of Peter took place by a fire, matching the setting of Peter’s denial of Jesus (John 18:15-27). After restoring Peter, Jesus gave him a new life purpose. Just as Jesus gave Peter a new life, he gives us new life.
This sermon was delivered Apr. 25, 2021, for the morning worship service of Webb Baptist Church in Arlington as part of an Easter series on the implications of Jesus’ resurrection.
