Joanna Jespersen: Throwing Stones

Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact [email protected].

The following is a devotional message for children, rather than a sermon (Updated May 8, 2023 by request of the featured minister).

Joanna Jespersen: Throwing Stones (John 8:2-11)

Joanna Jespersen, minister to children and families at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in Dallas, directs children’s attention to kindness. She refers to the common saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” In reality, unkind words can hurt deeply.

When a group of men threatened to stone a woman caught in sexual sin, Jesus’ response to them caused them to drop their stones. Jespersen guides children to turn actual rocks into blessings rather than something to throw at someone.

This children’s devotion was shared online during August 2020, for the children’s ministry of Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in Dallas.
