Around the State: Astronaut who walked on moon walks with Christ

Apollo astronaut Charles Duke told San Marcos Baptist Academy students his walk on the moon pales in comparison to his walk with Christ. In 1972, Duke became the 10th and youngest person to walk on the moon. “The walk on the moon lasted three days, but my walk with Jesus Christ will last forever,” he told the students.

Bill Tillman spoke at Wayland Baptist University as a part of thetillman300Bill Tillman university’s Pinson Lecture Series. The series, developed by former Baptist General Convention of Texas Executive Director Bill Pinson, fosters awareness of Baptist distictives. Tillman, director of theological education for the BGCT, challenged students to use Scripture to help define who they become, and he also reminded them God works through people in all walks of life and not just religious vocations.

Rachel Held Evans, author of A Year of Biblical Womanhood, will speak in Hardin-Simmons University’s chapel service March 4. She spent a year scouring the Bible for its rules and regulations about women and seeking to follow them. She also will take part in a question-and-answer session later in the day.

Tommy Brisco, provost and chief academic officer at Hardin-Simmons University, will deliver Wayland Baptist University’s Willson Lectures March 4-5. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, his topic will be “A Prophetic Call and its Consequences.” A reception and discussion time will follow. During Wednesday’s 11 a.m. chapel service, he will speak on “The Prophetic Vision of Hope.” He also will participate in a 1:30 p.m. question-and-answer session.

Natalie Aho, a communications consultant with Associated Baptist Press, natalie aho130Natalie Ahowill lead a digital ministry conference March 8 at Texas Christian University’s Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth. The conference will focus on how to create effective conversations and community online. Beginning at 9 a.m., sessions include “Five Church Communication Mistakes You Are Probably Making and How to Fix Them,” “I Need a Strategy for Facebook?” “Privacy, Security and Bullies, Oh My!” and others. Dallas Baptist University inducted three former baseball players into the program’s newly created Ring of Honor during its 22nd annual baseball banquet. Brandon Bantz, Victor Black and Ryan Goins all made their Major League Baseball debuts during the 2013 season.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor joined the city of Belton and Belton African American Churches United in renaming West Ninth Avenue in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Feb. 18. The street crosses the UMHB campus. Alveda King, King’s niece, spoke in UMHB chapel the next day on “Faith of our Fathers: King Family Legacy,” in recognition of Black History Month.
