Around the State: Bible translated into Uzbek; DBU receives challenge grant

The Baptist General Convention of Texas and Global Heart Ministries in Plano joined in hosting a presentation of the first translation of the Bible in to the Uzbek language—a task completed by the Institute for Bible Translation in Moscow. Uzbek-speaking Christians from throughout the United States and Canada participated in the Dallas event. A formal presentation of the Uzbkek Bible also occurred in Tashkent, with government officials in attendance.

Dallas Baptist University received a $1.5 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla., to be used in development of the east side of the university campus and to establish DBU’s first residential college. The overall cost of the first phase of DBU’s Transform Campaign will be $8.5 million.  To receive the $1.5 million challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation, the university must raise the remaining amount of the project by July 11, 2018. To date, DBU has raised $4.7 million, leaving $2.3 million still to raise. DBU has received several grants from the Mabee Foundation over the past 20 years, helping the university to complete the John G. Mahler Student Center, Spence Hall, the Patty and Bo Pilgrim Chapel, and Jim and Sally Nation Hall.

The B.H. Carroll Theological Institute launched a redesigned dual-track master of arts in counseling degree program. Students may choose to pursue the 76-hour track that provides the coursework and practicum training that prepares them to seek to become a licensed professional counselor, meeting requirements implemented by the state Aug. 1. It also serves as the foundation for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology and counseling. The 58-hour ministry track provides substantive training in counseling for a person working in a ministry setting that does not require licensure. For more information, click here

East Texas Baptist University awarded four students the ETBU Hispanic Christian Servant Leadership Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year—Omar D. Aguirre of Fort Worth, Jose Eduardo Hi of Dallas, Kayla A. Martinez of Gilmer and Sarai A. Muniz of Phaar. The scholarship, a partnership between ETBU and the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas, covers 50 percent of the recipients’ tuition and full room and board throughout the student’s undergraduate degree.

Six Howard Payne University students received year-end awards from the Texas Undergraduate Moot Court Association. Five HPU students made the list of TUMCA’s 2017 Top 20 Orators, while two HPU teams were among the five best teams in the state. Students who received orator awards were Isaac Sommers of Boerne, Jordan Hahn of Burnet, Jakob Morgan of Blanket, Bailey Myler of Brownwood and Rebeca Puente of Waskom. Puente and Sommers were named the fourth-best team in the state, and Hahn and Andie McCoy of Whitehouse were named the fifth-best team.
