Around the State: DBU honors adviser; Baylor board approves two regents

Dallas Baptist University recently named Jean Dudley of Granbury, academic adviser for the College of Education, as the 2016 Adviser of the Year. DBU grants the award based on student nominations. Students recommend advisers they believe go above and beyond their job descriptions to be caring and compassionate helpers throughout the educational process. Dudley has been a full-time adviser seven years.

Baylor University’s board of regents approved W. Brett Beene of Mexia and Dusty Sanderson of Amarillo as regents representing two athletic organizations, the Baylor Bear Foundation and the Baylor “B” Association of former lettermen. Beene, owner of an automobile and truck dealership, is a past president of the Bear Foundation. He served one year as a non-voting member of the board and was re-elected to serve an additional two years as a voting member through 2019. Sanderson, who has owned an oil and gas properties business 36 years, is president of the “B” Association. He was elected to serve a three-year term as a voting member of the board.

(HPU photo)Howard Payne University recently received $25,000 from Texas Bank through the James and Dorothy Doss Foundation. The gift benefits students from the Brownwood area and surrounding counties through the university’s Heart of Texas Scholarship Fund. This year, the funds are designated for students in HPU’s School of Business.

The Great Commission Summit, sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas and its Great Commission Team, will be held Aug. 11-12 at Dallas Baptist University. Featured speakers are John Meador, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Euless and president of One Conversation, and Eric Hankins, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Fairhope, Ark. Workshop topics include evangelism, the doctrine of salvation, discipleship, sermon preparation, music and worship. The annual BGCT Childhood and Family Ministry Summit will be scheduled as a part of the Great Commission Summit and will include equipping seminars for teachers in weekday ministry programs and in preschool and children’s Bible study. Cost is $75 through July 10 and $100 thereafter. Registration includes lunch on both days if payment is received before Aug. 2. To register, click here

Retirement

Don Miller, executive pastor at First Baptist Church in Mansfield, after 40 years at the congregation. A dinner in his honor is scheduled at 6 p.m., July 30, in the gymnasium at First Baptist Church, 1800 E. Broad St. in Mansfield.
