Around the State: DBU student group visits Israel; Atchison to lecture at Wayland

DBU En Gedi 400During a recent trip to Israel, a student group from Dallas Baptist University spent a day hiking the En Gedi oasis and listened to a lecture near one of the area’s waterfalls before floating in the Dead Sea. (Photo / Courtney Hackett / DBU)For the sixth consecutive year, Dallas Baptist University sent a student group to Israel to tour, learn and serve. Jay Harley, DBU vice president for student affairs, and Brent Thomason, assistant professor of biblical studies and director of the master’s degree program in international studies program, led the group of 20 students who toured sites of biblical significance in Jerusalem, Nazareth and surrounding areas. Ross O’Brien, professor of management and director of the Center for Business as Mission, led business students in a series of meetings with business leaders in Nazareth. Religion students traveled to Tel Aviv to serve with Nazareth Baptist School as they held the first session of a three-week summer camp program at The Potter’s Wheel Camp.

Delvin Atchison 200Delvin AtchisonDelvin Atchison, director of the Great Commission Team with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will speak on applied Christianity and daily living when he delivers the Willson Lectures at Wayland Baptist University. The Willson Lectures chapel is scheduled at 11 a.m. Sept. 6 in Harral Memorial Auditorium. Atchison also will participate in a panel discussion and forum at 1:45 p.m. in the Nunn Business Building auditorium. Both events are open to the public. Wayland established the Willson Lectures in 1950s with gifts from Floydada residents James M. and Mavis Willson.

ETBU Hymn Sing 300The Great East Texas Hymn Sing is scheduled Sept. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Baker Chapel of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center on the East Texas Baptist University campus. The ETBU University Chorus will perform. A reception will follow immediately in the Edwards Conference Center. For more information, call (903) 923-2071 or email [email protected].

René Maciel, past president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and community life pastor of First Woodway Baptist Church in Waco, will speak at the annual Howard Payne University convocation, 10 a.m. Aug. 23 in Mims Auditorium on the HPU campus. Maciel previously was president of the Baptist University of the Américas.

East Texas Baptist University, in conjunction with both the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, will present the 2017 Worship Summit Oct. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the Ornelas Student Center. The summit will feature evangelist and worship leader Billy Foote, along with Andrew Pressley and Tom Webster with the ETBU worship and music faculty. The event is open to anyone who wants to enrich their church’s worship experience and network with other worship leaders. The fee to attend is $25, which covers the conference, a continental breakfast and lunch. For more information, call (903) 923-2158 or email [email protected].

Cheryl Mangrum 150Cheryl MangrumCheryl Mangrum, associate director of admission at Howard Payne University, was honored by colleagues at the annual meeting of the National Association of Baptist Enrollment Professionals. Mangrum, who has been employed in admission and recruiting at HPU since 1981, received the inaugural Trent Argo Memorial Award, described by presenters as the “most valuable player” award among enrollment teams from 13 member institutions across seven states.
