Around the State: San Antonio church fights hunger; children enjoy ‘brain games’ at HPU

The San Antonio Food Bank presented its Hunger Fighting Team of the Year award to Christian Family Baptist Church in San Antonio. The church’s food-distribution ministry serves about 1,300 registered clients. It involves an average of 120 volunteers, including many military personnel and others who are not church members. The Texas Baptist Hunger Offering contributes to the food-distribution program. Rob Johnson is pastor.

climbing wall 250A Summer Scholar enjoys the climbing wall as part of the physical education emphasis at camps on the Howard Payne University campus.More than 100 children participated in the weeklong Summer Scholars and Young Scholars programs on the Howard Payne University campus. “Brain Games” was the theme of the camps, which offered instruction in robotics, 3D printing, music, science and physical education. Julie Walker, chair of the communications studies department at HPU, directs the programs.

East Texas Baptist University will offer a master of science degree in kinesiology beginning with the fall semester. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges board granted approval for the program. It marks the first graduate degree offered by ETBU’s Frank S. Groner School of Professional Studies and the department of kinesiology. The accrediting agency also approved ETBU’s online master of science degree in business administration earlier this summer, and several other graduate degrees are in the review process.

Howard Payne University’s Melody Maxwell, assistant professor of Christian studies, and Derek Hatch, associate professor of Christian studies, presented papers at the Baptist World Alliance gathering in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Maxwell, a member of the BWA Commission on Mission, presented a paper tracing the history, strategies and legacy of 19th century Baptist missionaries. Hatch, a member of the BWA Commission on Doctrine and Christian Unity, explored possibilities for Baptists to celebrate the lives of the saints in their worship and practice.
