Howard Payne University captured the Southwestern Regional Moot Court championship. The HPU team defeated the top team from Texas A&M University in the final round to capture the title. Katie Rose Bonner from Lytle and Elizabeth Rogers from Grand Junction, Colo., were named Southwestern Regional champions and received an automatic invitation to the national championship of Intercollegiate Moot Court at the Sandra Day O’Connor of Law at Arizona State University. Cayden McDonald of Whitehouse and Christopher Mitchell of Pecos advanced to the quarterfinals, and they later also received an invitation to the national competition.

First Baptist Church in Canton will host its seventh annual Legacy of Love event Feb. 21-22. Kathy Peel will be the featured speaker. The weekend retreat is for single mothers and “married singles”—women whose husbands are in the military or who travel extensively. Participants will polish their business skills, take a cooking class, learn a new craft, get legal advice, learn to live abundantly on a dollar and learn tips for strengthening relationships. The retreat begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday and continues until 9 p.m. Saturday. Dinner on Friday evening and lunch and dinner on Saturday are provided.
