Around the State: Legacy Awards; Women’s conference at Jefferson

Texas Baptists honored Sam Prestidge, founder of Singing Men of Texas, and Tillie Burgin, founder of Mission Arlington, with Legacy Awards June 5 at the historic Independence Baptist Church near Brenham. 

Christian author Angela Thomas will be the featured speaker at the “Redeemed” women’s conference, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 at First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Cost is $30 per person.

Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas marked the 50th anniversary of the dedication of its sanctuary June 5. George Mason is pastor.

Eleven Baylor University student journalists earned 15 awards for outstanding work in media from the Baptist Communicators Association at its national conference. Baylor students won awards in photography, news writing, feature writing, audio-visual communications, interactive communications for the website and total package for the student yearbook and newspaper. Baylor winners were Jessica Babb, Harker Heights; Dane Chronister, League City; Joshua Davis, Denton; Trey Gregory, Albuquerque, N.M.; Taylor Griffin, Tyler; Rae Jefferson, Houston; Shehan Jeyarajah, Coppell; Hannah Neumann, Dripping Springs; Didi Martinez, Katy; Jeffrey Swindoll; Miami, Fla.; and Travis Taylor, Woodbury, Minn. In addition, the Baylor Lariat newspaper has been ranked among the Top 10 university newspapers nationally the last three years, while www.baylorlariat.com is ranked as the No. 1 college newspaper website in the country by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The student magazine’s website, www.baylorfocusmagazine.com, also is ranked No. 1 nationally, and the university’s yearbook, the Baylor Roundup, has been ranked in the Top 5 nationally the last three years.
