Thousands of women are expected to gather in Houston’s Lakewood Church Feb. 21-22 for the Women of Faith “Unwrap the Bible” event, an in-depth Bible study with well-known teachers. Baptist Child & Family Services Foundation has joined with Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust to fund a mobile medical unit to deliver care to individuals along the Texas-Mexico border near Laredo and in areas impacted by disaster. The mobile unit will bring medical care directly to communities that have some of the highest rates of poverty and lack of insurance. It is outfitted with an exam room, monitoring technology such as a non-fetal stress test monitor and ultrasound, and other medical tools needed to fulfill its mission of delivering prenatal and postpartum care to women living in the colonias. It also is equipped with neonatal capabilities should a hospital need to evacuate during an emergency, such as a hurricane. The vehicle also can serve as a resource for firefighters and other first responders, equipped with liquid cooling vests, wireless vital signs monitors, oxygen units and other tools to assist responders during an emergency.

East Texas Baptist University will hold the Sam B. Hall lecture and banquet Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Ornelas Student Center. Gene Stallings, a Hall of Fame football coach and head coach of the 1992 University of Alabama national championship team, will speak. The program also will include announcement of the recipient of the Sam B. Hall Civic Service Award. Tickets are $50 per person. Call (903) 923-2083 for more information.

Baylor University named Meera Chandrasekhar, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Missouri, as the 2014 recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. The Cherry Award is the only national award presented by a university to an individual for great teaching. It carries a monetary award of $250,000. She is expected to teach in residence at Baylor during the spring 2015 semester.

Dallas Baptist University will hold its winter Patriot Preview for prospective students and their parents Feb. 8. A tour of the campus, meetings with faculty and administrators, and information concerning admissions, financial aid and campus life are included in the event. Wayland Baptist University will hold a dedication ceremony for the new turf installed at David and Myrt Wilder Field Feb. 21 at 1:45 p.m. A baseball game will follow at 2 p.m.

Howard Payne University honored 237 students for academic success during the fall semester. Students had to earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5 to be included on the list.
