Baptist Briefs: Graham honored

Carson-Newman honors Graham. Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn., named Billy Graham “Evangelist of the 20th Century.” Randall O’Brien, president of the university, presented the recognition—unanimously granted by the Baptist school’s board of trustees—to Graham at his home in Montreat, N.C. “At Carson-Newman we believe in the power of the gospel in transforming lives to better serve God and neighbor. I can think of no one in modern history who has helped transform more lives for the kingdom of God than Billy Graham,” O’Brien said.  “This award joyfully recognizes Dr. Graham’s faithful service and heart for sharing with others the saving love of Christ.”

Australian Baptists stress preparation for disasters. An Australian Baptist organization long committed to disaster relief and recovery is shifting focus to prepare communities for the impact of disasters before they happen. Baptist World Aid Australia announced a “Disaster Plus” campaign to raise funds over the next year to support and train vulnerable communities to prepare for potential disasters. The World Bank estimates an investment of $1 spent preparing vulnerable communities to cope when natural disaster strikes saves around $7 in costs of emergency response.
