Stassen wins BWA award. Ethicist Glen Stassen has been named the 2013 recipient of the Baptist World Alliance’s Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award. The award, approved during a recent meeting of the BWA executive committee in Falls Church, Va., will be presented during the BWA annual gathering July 1-6 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Stassen, 77, taught Christian ethics 20 years at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., before joining the faculty of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., in 1997 as the Lewis B. Smedes Professor of Christian Ethics. He is a member of the BWA Commission on Peace and a former board member of Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America. He sits on editorial advisory boards of both Sojourners and Creation Care magazines. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Stassen received his master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and his doctorate from Duke University.
Lipper Fund honors GuideStone. For the second year in a row, GuideStone Financial Resources received a Lipper Fund Award, this time for the Best Fund Over Three Years for the MyDestination 2025 Fund. GuideStone’s MyDestination Funds became the nation’s first Christian-based, socially screened date-target fund when it launched in August 2006. The MyDestination 2025 Fund ranked No. 1 out of 92 similar funds for its performance over the three years ending Nov. 30, 2012. In 2012, the entire GuideStone Funds family ranked No. 1 out of 182 eligible fund families with up to $40 billion in assets and received Lipper’s Best Overall Small Fund Group in the United States designation over the three-year period ending Nov. 30, 2011.
American Baptists, CBF explore closer ties. Leaders of American Baptist Churches USA and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship met recently in Philadelphia and Atlanta to explore closer cooperation between the two groups. Interim Coordinator Pat Anderson, who will stay on through March to help ease transition for Suzii Paynter, participated in a meeting at American Baptist headquarters in King of Prussia, Pa., part of Philadelphia’s metropolitan area, brokered by American Baptist minister, author and sociologist Tony Campolo. After the half-day meeting at ABC headquarters, American Baptist General Secretary Roy Medley brought a similar delegation to visit the CBF Resource Center in Atlanta.
