Mercer professor to rebuild Liberian seminary. Mercer University professor Richard Wilson will lead the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary in 2014, a position that will require him to rebuild the infrastructure, faculty and image of the war-torn institution. Wilson, chairman of Mercer’s Christianity department, will serve a one-year appointment as president beginning Jan. 4. The job also includes helping nurture far-flung Baptist congregations struggling with high unemployment and low literacy rates, as well as finding a Liberian to become president of the seminary when his term ends next December.mercer_liberia
Ergun Caner to lead Georgia Baptist college. Ergun Caner, former head of Liberty University’s seminary, has been named president of Brewton-Parker College, one of three colleges affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention. Caner, 48, was demoted by Liberty University trustees three years ago after they found him guilty of “factual statements that are self-contradictory” in his popular “Jihad to Jesus” testimony claiming he received terrorist training before converting from Islam to Christianity. Caner comes to the Brewton-Parker post in Mount Vernon, Ga., from Arlington Baptist College in Arlington, an independent fundamentalist school where he served as provost and academic dean since 2011. Caner, a graduate of Criswell College with both master of divinity and master of theology degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina, is author of books including Unveiling Islam, an award winner co-written with his brother, Emir, who is president of Truett-McConnell College, also affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention.
