Singer walks by faith, not sight

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—In spite of the obstacles singer/songwriter Ginny Owens has endured due to a degenerative eye condition that caused her to completely lose her vision when she was just 2 years old, she shares a powerful message about staying focused on God.

After graduating from Belmont University in 1997 with a degree in music education, Owens had hoped to pursue a teaching career. However, when that plan didn't work out, she began performing concerts across the country, reminding audiences of God's unique plan and purpose for their lives.

Almost 15 years later and with multiple awards along the way, Owens never has wavered in her commitment to sharing the gospel through songs. Last year, she performed at the 60th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer in Washington, D.C.

"I've been on a journey and have had different experiences that probably a lot people don't know about. So, at my concerts, I really want to share the story of what God has done in my life," Owens said. "Hopefully, it encourages others to also place their trust in him."

Owens notes the title of her latest album, Get In, I'm Driving, serves as a reminder of her life—being on a great adventure with God leading the way.

"Since I lost my eyesight at a very young age, driving is probably not something you want me to do—unless you have an incredible amount of faith," Owens said. "The foundation of truth behind this title is that I'm not really driving at all. All through the day, God is the one at the wheel. Every day is a new adventure with God leading, and he's telling me to get in the passenger seat because I need to be ready for the ride.

"I hope that these songs encourage people with the good news of who Jesus is. I really want people to know that there is hope in this life because of him and that the same God who created the universe also loves his children unconditionally. Ultimately, I want to communicate that there is so much to be excited about and grateful for in our lives."

Through the years, Owens has received numerous messages about how her music has inspired people and has led them to Christ as their source of strength.

"I received an email recently from a young girl who had been struggling with self-esteem issues, and she said that listening to my music gave her the courage to keep going," Owens said. "It's hard to go through difficult times, and I think what we all need during those times is someone who comes along and says: 'I love you, and God loves you. Remember, God has never left your side, and he will never leave you.'

"One of the most important lessons I've learned about going through trials is the importance of putting one foot in front of the other with faith leading the way, focusing on God and what it's like to know him. If we keep our eyes on him through the different trials of life, then that's how we grow in our faith."
