Obituaries: Barron, Lewis, Perales, Perez

Jacquelyn Barron, 86, Jan. 5 in Dallas. She was a graduate of Baylor University and earned a master’s degree at Hardin-Simmons University at age 77. Jacquelyn BarronAn avid reader, several years ago she donated a large collection of the works of William Faulkner—including several rare first editions—to HSU. She and her husband established several scholarships at Baylor, Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne universities to promote higher education. She was a member of HSU’s board of development and a member of the John G. Hardin Society, which helps maintain the long-term fiscal stability of HSU. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanton. She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Nesbit, Joanne Newton, Beverly Barnes and Kathleen Hamilton; sister, Joanne Williams; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bea Lewis, 70, Jan. 2 in New Orleans. She was a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and also had served on the Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas Executive Board. She worked with Baptist Women, Mission Friends, Acteens, Mission Action, lay renewal, Mission Service Corps, the Mission Development Council and several other organizations. She also was assistant manager of the Home and Hope Shelter in Killeen. She was a member of Soldiers of the Cross Cowboy Fellowship in Nolanville. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Howard, and grandson, Reginald Richardson. She is survived by her sons, Michael, James and William; daughter, Monica Woods; brother, Russell Howard; sisters, Barbara Howard, Gail Williams, Katherine Franklin, Marilyn Howard, Carolyn Howard and Evelyn Stevens; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Moses Perales, 83, Jan. 12 in Fort Worth. A Moses Peralesformer pastor, he also was a former president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas and director of missions for the North Texas Hispanic Baptist Association. He was a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rachel; daughter, Ysela Rosales; sons, Moses and Thomas; and five grandchildren.

Helio Perez, 92, Jan. 13 in Harlingen. A master plumber and business owner, he was the father of Bea Mesquias, president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas and former president of Hispanic Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatriz; sons, Alejandro and David; grandson, Raul Perez Jr.; brothers, Manuel and Johnny; and sister, Bertha Arrisa. He is survived by his daughters, Bea Mesquias, Rose Silguero, Bertha Perez and Mary Lou Schanen; sons, Raul and Helio Jr.; brother, Federico; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
