Obituary: Elizabeth Johnson Morgan

Elizabeth Johnson Morgan, 90, died Oct. 16 in Richardson. She was an educator, writer and longtime member of First Baptist Church in Richardson, where she was the church historian. She served faithfully beside her husband of 68 years, Darold, a pastor and former president of the Southern Baptist Annuity Board (now GuideStone Financial Resources), traveling on mission ventures around the world and team-teaching a Sunday school class with him more than 35 years. Elizabeth Johnson MorganShe was born to George and Roma Johnson in Fort Worth Jan. 3, 1925, and grew up in Missouri and Illinois, graduating from the University of Southern Illinois. She returned to Fort Worth and completed a master’s degree in religious education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. After marrying in 1947, she taught school and was a devoted pastor’s wife, serving in churches in Texas and Alabama. She later completed a second master’s degree and a doctorate in English rhetoric from Texas Woman’s University. She taught English at the University of Texas at Arlington before retiring and spending more time at her second home in her beloved Glorieta, N.M. In addition to being an accomplished writer and teacher, she was a gourmet cook, artist and master gardener. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time in Great Britain and New Mexico. She is survived by her husband; their children and spouses, Tim and Jane Morgan of Dallas, Marshall and Debbie Morgan of Odessa and Julie and Billy Reynolds of Celeste; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. The family expressed appreciation for the dedicated care team, headed by daughter Julie and including Allie Banda, Amanda Beck and Sandra Robles, who cared for her during her final years. Visitation will be held at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave. in Dallas from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 18. A memorial service will be at First Baptist Church of Richardson at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chapel Fund at First Baptist Church of Richardson, Hawaii Baptist Academy in Honolulu or the Mission Dignity Program at GuideStone Financial Resources.
