Gene Hawkins, longtime associational director of missions and Baptist pastor, died July 2. He was 91.

Gene Hawkins, longtime associational director of missions and Baptist pastor, died July 2. He was 91. He was born Feb. 2, 1930, to Roy and Ruth Hawkins in Bovina. He graduated from Wayland Baptist University, where he later served more than 35 years on the board of trustees. Beginning in 1956, he served a series of churches as pastor, and he was president of Kansas-Nebraska Missions in the late 1970s. He became director of missions for Lubbock Area Baptist Association in 1984, serving until 1995. He also was interim director of missions several times after his retirement, and he was interim pastor of more than 20 churches. He was preceded in death by son, Keith Hawkins; daughter, Nancy Horn; grandson, Greg Horn; and brothers, Charles Hawkins, Harold Hawkins and Erith Hawkins. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Louise; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Roylene Keel. His family designated the Gene Hawkins Scholarship fund at Wayland Baptist University for contributions donated in his memory.
