Obituary: Pete Murray

Pete Murray, 79, May 4 in Ruidoso, N.M. Murray was a two-sport athlete for the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys from 1952 to 1957. Pete MurrayHe played football in 1952, 1953 and 1955, and he played basketball from 1954 to 1957. He is one of only four Division I athletes to claim two team victories in two sports on the same day—defeating Texas Tech in football and Midwestern University in basketball. During his senior year, he was named HSU’s Most Outstanding Athlete. He went on to play for the Washington Redskins. He later was a football coach, winning a national championship while at Texas A&I. He was inducted in the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He is survived by his wife, Anita; daughters, Melissa Mechem and Melanie Gerzik; son, Benjamin; and brother, David.
