Obituary: William Davenport

William P. Davenport, 86, Dec. 14, in Karnes City. He preached his first sermon at age 13 at First Baptist Church in Crystal City. He went on to graduate from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Early pastorates included Baptist churches in Liberty Hill, Robinson and Rockdale before he moved to St. Paul, Minn., were he served six years as a church planter. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Karnes City from 1971 to 1989 and First Baptist Church in Runge from 1989 to 1998. He was involved in the ministerial alliance in the communities where he lived, was a member of the Lion’s Club and was an avid supporter of Karnes City Badger football, announcing games at times. He had a passion for gardening and was a hobbyist beekeeper. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joanne Glass Davenport; son, William Paul Davenport of Karnes City; daughter, Lyn Brady of Austin; and five grandchildren.
