Texas Tidbits: Bilingual evangelistic event set in El Paso

Bilingual evangelistic event slated in El Paso. The April 5-6 Greater El Paso Festival of Hope will feature messages by evangelist Franklin Graham, translated live from the platform by Galo Vasquez, director of Latin American Ministries with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Vasquez has served as Graham’s translator during evangelistic events in Central and South America, but the 2011 Festival de Esperanza in Los Angeles marked the only other occasion in the United States when he has provided on-platform translation. One-third of the churches involved in the El Paso festival are Spanish-speaking congregations. The festival will be held at the University of Texas-El Paso’s Don Haskins Center.

Marketplace Ministries founder honored. Dallas Baptist University presented its Tom Landry Leadership Award to Gil Stricklin, founder of Marketplace Ministries/Marketplace Chaplains, the nation’s first and largest workplace chaplaincy organization. gil stricklin130Gil StricklinDBU grants the award to individuals who use their God-given talents and abilities to excel in their chosen field of work, who exhibit exceptional leadership, are committed to serving others in their community and demonstrate integrity in their personal lives. Stricklin and his wife, Ann, also received the L.R. Scarborough Award from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth for introducing the concept of chaplaincy—typically prevalent in the military and hospitals—to corporate America.

Private gifts for Baylor track stadium top $8 million. Baylor University alumni and supporters have given $8 million to date toward the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium, an on-campus, $18.1-million facility. The stadium will accommodate 5,000 spectators and participants. Located adjacent to the new football stadium, the track and field facility is slated for completion in time for the 2014-15 season. Hart, a 1956 Baylor graduate, served 42 years as Baylor’s head track and field coach before retiring in 2005 to become director of track and field.
