The Baptist Standard and CommonCall received five “Best of Christian Press” awards for 2013 from the Associated Church Press.
Editor Marv Knox received the James Solheim Award for Editorial Courage for “Get ready for all those babies.”
The editorial, which garnered an award of merit, challenged Texans to provide the educational, nutritional and social needs of children who will grow to maturity because the Texas Legislature passed more restrictive laws regarding abortion.
The same editorial also won top honors in the “news service/website/blog category,” receiving an award of excellence.
Knox also received an award of merit in the “columns: magazine/journal” category for his “Edgewise” column that appears in the monthly CommonCall magazine.
The Baptist Standard received an honorable mention award for in-depth coverage in the “news service/website/blog” category for reports by Leah Allen, a 2013 intern, and Managing Editor Ken Camp on “Loving West.” The articles focused on disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts following a fertilizer plant explosion in the Central Texas town of West.
Associated Church Press, founded in 1916, is an international organization of Christian communications professionals. ACP recognized award winners at a recent banquet in Chicago.
